How we grade our treks

Grades reflect altitude, daily distance, terrain and trip length. Weather can make any trail harder, so read each trek's fitness notes too.

How to choose the right trek in Himachal Pradesh

  • By difficulty

New to trekking? Start with Easy or a gentler Moderate route. Experienced trekkers can look at Challenging and Tough routes.

  • By season

High passes open once the snow clears, usually from June. Lower trails open earlier and stay walkable later into the year.

  • By time

Two- and three-day routes fit a long weekend. Allow a week or more for Mantalai or Pin Parvati Pass.

  • By altitude

Higher routes ask more of your body. Check the maximum altitude and give yourself time to prepare.

Trekking in Himachal Pradesh: what to know

Most of our routes start from Manali, Naggar or Kasol. Short trails around the Parvati Valley, such as Khirganga and Bhun Bhuni Top, have the longest seasons. Higher routes such as Bhrigu Lake, Beaskund and Hampta Pass are usually walked from about May or June to October, and Pin Parvati Pass has the shortest window, usually July to September.

Basic fitness makes a real difference. Regular walking, stair climbing or light jogging for three to four weeks before you travel helps, especially on routes above 10,000 ft where altitude starts to affect many people. Trek leaders watch for signs of altitude sickness, and plans can change if someone needs to descend.

Permits for your route are arranged as part of the package. Please carry out everything you carry in, and respect the villages and grazing grounds the trails pass through.

Questions about treks in Himachal Pradesh

Which treks in Himachal Pradesh suit beginners?

Start with the Khirganga Trek, our only Easy route. Reasonably fit first-timers often choose Moderate treks such as Chandrakhani Pass, Bhun Bhuni Top or Sar Pass. Read the fitness notes on each trek page first.

How do you grade difficulty?

We use four grades: Easy, Moderate, Challenging and Tough, based on altitude, daily distance, terrain and the number of days. Dev Ropa is graded Moderate-Difficult in its route notes and appears under Challenging in the filter.

When is the best time to trek in Himachal Pradesh?

It varies by route. High passes such as Hampta Pass and Pin Parvati Pass open once the snow clears, roughly June to October. Lower trails such as Khirganga are walkable for more months. Each trek page lists its season.

What should I carry on a trek?

Trekking shoes with good grip, warm layers, a rain jacket, a daypack, a water bottle, sun protection and any personal medication. Each trek page has its own packing list, and some gear can be rented on request.

Are meals and camping included?

On most treks, yes. A few shorter routes, such as Khirganga and Bhun Bhuni Top, arrange some meals or camping locally. Each trek page lists what is included and what is usually extra.

Can I join a trek on my own?

Yes. Solo travellers can join a small-group departure, subject to availability for your dates.

How do I book a trek?
